Counting Animals in War

چکیده
War is harmful to animals, but few have considered how such harm should affect assessments of the justice military actions. In this article, we propose a way in which concern for animals can be included within just-war framework, with focus on necessity and proportionality. We argue that counting war will not make theory excessively demanding, it more humane. By showing our proportionality assessments, provide crucial first step towards developing an animal-inclusive account theory.

Counting in Animals and Humans
Throughout the century many anthropologists, psychologists, and historians of mathematics have assumed that there is a sharp discontinuity between the arithmetic abilities of animals, infants, young children and early or "primitive" societies, on the one hand and, older children and acculturated societies, on the other hand. Over and over again reports of birds, dogs, apes, bees, etc., keeping ...
متن کاملCounting Casualties in the War on Prisoners
OVER THE LAST SEVERAL DECADES, numerous prisons in the United States have operated in a state of crisis.1 The sheer number of persons incarcerated during these years overwhelmed the capacity to safely and humanely house and administer to the prisoners placed under correctional control. Policies of mass incarceration that were pursued over these decades created drastic shortages of space and res...
متن کاملCounting lattice animals in high dimensions
We present an implementation of Redelemeier’s algorithm for the enumeration of lattice animals in high-dimensional lattices. The implementation is lean and fast enough to allow us to extend the existing tables of animal counts, perimeter polynomials and series expansion coefficients in d-dimensional hypercubic lattices for 3 ≤ d ≤ 10. From the data we compute formulae for perimeter polynomials ...
متن کاملCounting Lattice Animals: A Parallel Attack
A parallel algorithm for the enumeration of isolated connected clusters on a regular lattice is presented. The algorithm has been implemented on 17 RISCbased workstations to calculate the perimeter polynomials for the plane triangular lattice up to clustersize s = 21. New data for perimeter polynomials D s up to D21, total number of clusters gs up to g22, and coefficients b~ in the low-density ...
متن کاملA Method for Counting Blood Platelets in Small Animals *
In the course of studying the influence of endocrine secretions on the level of the blood platelets, a counting method has been used which is applicable to small animals such as rats and mice, and which seems preferable in certain respects to'the conventional method of Rees and Ecker4 as adapted to small animals. The method adopted is essentially that of Nygaard.3 Sources of error have been mor...
